Rationale
As a forward thinking, modern school, Dove Green Private School recognises the importance of technology and computing literacy for all our children, especially the use of portable electronic devices. Our children are using and engaging with technology to support and enhance their learning outside of school. To ensure our children are as prepared as possible for a technology rich future, we have identified the need to make home and school learning more intrinsically linked.
In an effort to empower students to take ownership over their learning, we will be introducing a ‘Bring your own device policy’ for all students at Dove Green Private School. This policy will encourage children to bring their own handheld computing devices to school to enrich and extend their learning in the classroom.
We would like to stress that this is not a compulsory policy and that children are encouraged not forced to bring their devices into school. The school is well stocked with over 50 laptops and 50 iPads, but to encourage more independent research, we are bringing in this policy, that many schools in Dubai employ. No one, child or parent, should feel pressured to purchase or supply a device purely for school use.
Guidelines
As part of this new policy, the following guidelines apply:
- Students can bring their own mobile computing devices to school for use in their classes.
- Mobile phones are not an acceptable device to use for this program.
- Devices will be used for research purposes and internet access, or APPs specified by the teacher.
- Teachers may allow children to use devices outside of lessons during specific circumstances such as red play.
- Students and parents will need to be aware of the school’s policy surrounding BYOD and will need to register the device when it is brought to school by signing the BYOD Student Agreement.
- The student is solely responsible for any equipment that he/she brings to school. Dove Green Private School is not liable for damaged, lost, or stolen equipment.
- All devices that will be used on the school Internet connection must be registered with the school.
- It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that any mobile device that is brought to school should be in full working order and fully charged for that day.
- Class teachers will be able to confiscate devices if children are using them inappropriately.
- When students use technology inappropriately while on the school network, the same consequences apply, regardless of who owns the device.
We are aware that this is a significant commitment for the school, parents and students alike. It is important therefore that parents fully understand the program outlined above.
There is one document included that must be signed by a parent and your son/daughter. Please read this document carefully, sign and return to your child’s teacher.
If you require any additional information regarding this matter please do not hesitate to contact Mr Roddy, our computing coordinator.
Thank you for your continued support of Dove Green Private School.
